Glen Urquhart Shinty Festival 2015
Sat 20th June saw the annual Glen Urquhart shinty festival take place at Blairbeg Park, Drumnadrochit. The festival was set up by Jimmac MacKintosh and the late Prof Peter English who the P6/7 Six a side trophy is in memory of.
The morning saw a large number of children take part in the “skills awards” with the festival record for “keepy uppy’s” being broken by Cameron Tillman of Beauly.
The skills awards are broken down into three sections of Group A – Primary 6/7, Group B – P4/5 and Group C – P3 and under. The Champion of Champions for 2015 were as follows:
Group A – Ethan MacAskill – Lovat
Group B – Torrain Cairns – Beauly
Group C – Marcus MacRae – Beauly
This year saw the introduction of a new girls award for the skills and the winner was:
Abi Stoddart – Glen Urquhart
The winners of the P5 and under six a side competition were Beauly with Strathglass as runner’s up.
The winner of the Peter English memorial trophy for P7 & under were also Beauly with Glen Urquhart as runner’s up.
The trophies and medals were presented by Peter’s brother Bob English.
Festival organiser Peter MacDonald said, “We are delighted that the festival continues in great spirit and records continue to be broken in the skills awards. We are continually looking at ways of developing the event and hope to increase player and parent/volunteer participation for 2016. I wish to express my sincere thanks to the large number of volunteers who make the day possible from team coaches, judges, BBQ staff, set up staff to parents and guardians. I wish to extend a special thanks to the younger helpers who are participating in Duke of Edinburgh awards.”
